Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Harry Potter 1.4 The Keeper of the Keys Synopsis
BOOM! The loud banging continued outside the door. Vernon ran in with a gun when the door was smashed. A large bearded man entered with a full face. He turned the barrel of Uncle Vernon’s gun like a cookie, sat down and wished Harry a happy birthday, then handed him a crumbled cake. The giant made himself at home, made a fire, made tea, and cooked sausages. He introduces himself as Rubeus Hagrid, Holder of the Keys and Bases at Hogwarts. Hagrid is appalled that the Dursleys haven’t revealed anything to Harry about his or his parents’ past, and furious to learn that his mother and father have died in a car crash. Hagrid explains that Harry is a wizard – a very famous wizard, in fact. He gives Harry his letter, which is now addressed to him at the chalet. Letter inviting Harry to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Owl Hagrid Professor Dumbledore says he has found Harry and will take him to get his school supplies. Petunia began to get angry and Harry knew that she and Uncle Vernon had always known about her past. Hagrid tells Harry about a dark wizard named Voldemort (although Hagrid is hard to name and looks scared), who ten years ago (when Harry was one year old) found and killed his parents. Harry, James, and Lily. Potter. He also tried to kill Harry but failed and left Harry with a scar on his forehead. When asked what happened to Voldemort, Hagrid tells Harry that no one is sure, but something happened to him (he tried to kill Harry on Halloween night) that forced him into hiding.
Harry wonders if he’s really a wizard, but Hagrid wonders if he’s ever made things happen when he’s angry or scared. Harry remembered the things he’d done, the pain in his lower back last time, and smiled. Uncle Vernon interrupted him, saying that Harry didn’t go to magic school. Harry was angry that his aunt and uncle knew he was a wizard, as were his parents, and lied about James and Lily’s deaths. Vernon refused to pay, then insulted Albus Dumbledore, calling him “a crazy old maniac”. Hagrid, enraged, uses his umbrella (apparently containing his wand) to give Dudley a braid. The Dursleys rushed into another room, terrified. Hagrid asks Harry to avoid telling anyone at Hogwarts that he has been practicing magic, as he is forbidden to use it, even though he is only allowed to use it in the quest to find Harry. Hagrid explains that he was kicked out of Hogwarts in his third year, though he changes the subject when Harry asks him more. It’s late and Hagrid says they have more work to do tomorrow. Then they fell asleep, Hagrid on the couch, Harry under Hagrid’s giant coat on the floor.
