- The Boy Who Lived – In which Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall have a talk as well as the Dursley family is introduced. We also hear about the strange events preceding Harry Potter’s appearance at their door.
- The Vanishing Glass – In which the tragic circumstances in which Harry has lived for the previous 10 years are described, as well as a trip to the zoo that goes wrong.
- The Letters From No One – In which Dudley receives his new uniform and a letter for Harry comes, which Uncle Vernon smashes, resulting in a flood of mail over the following several days. Uncle Vernon then tries to flee the delivery of the letters by taking his family to an abandoned cabin on an ocean island.
- The Keeper of the Keys – When Hagrid arrives at the hut, he informs Harry that he is a wizard and that he has been admitted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. To his uncle’s chagrin, Harry also learns the truth about his parents’ deaths and the cause of the scar on his forehead.
- Diagon Alley – In which Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley in London to retrieve his inheritance and buy school supplies, including a wand and Hedwig the snowy owl. Meanwhile, Hagrid receives a secret package from Gringotts Vault 713, Harry meets Draco Malfoy, and Hagrid gives Harry his Hogwarts Express tickets.
- The Journey From Platform Nine and Three Quarters – In which Uncle Vernon takes Harry to King’s Cross station and leaves him there. Harry meets the Weasleys, who help him to the nine-thirty-three platform and get on the train. Here he meets Ron and meets Hermione as the train pulls into Hogwarts. After reaching the school, Hagrid meets them and takes the first-graders to the castle by boat.
- The Sorting Hat – In which Professor McGonagall tells the first-years about the school and they are sorted into houses using a sorting hat. Dumbledore then welcomes them, they have a feast and find their dormitory for their first night at Hogwarts.
- The Potions Master – In which everyone at school points and stares at Harry as he starts his first day of classes and meets his teachers, visits Hagrid, and learns about the Gringotts break-in.
- The Midnight Duel – While Gryffindor and Slytherin are learning to fly together, Neville injures himself on a broomstick, and Harry and Draco have a broomstick fight over Neville’s Memorial, resulting in Harry becoming the Gryffindor Quidditch scout. Draco later challenges Harry to a wizard’s duel, but instead of a duel, he tells Filch in hopes that Harry will be caught and eliminated. Harry and his friends evade Filch and, meeting the three-headed dog Fluffy, return safely to their dormitory.
- Hallowe’en – In which Harry receives a Nimbus 2000 broom, learns the rules of Quidditch, and begins training. On Halloween, Hermione masters levitation in Charms class, but jealous Ron’s remarks force her to tearfully go to the girls’ bathroom, where she is trapped with a troll. Harry and Ron run to her aid and defeat the troll. Hermione lies to avoid trouble and they become friends.
- Quidditch – In which Snape takes Harry’s book, causing Harry to see Snape’s injured leg. Harry’s first Quidditch match against Slytherin, in which someone bent his broom, but he caught the snitch and still won. Hagrid later reveals the secret.
- The Mirror of Erised – In which Harry, Ron and Hermione begin searching the library for facts about Flamel, the school is empty for Christmas, Ron teaches Harry wizard chess, Harry receives his father’s invisibility cloak for Christmas, tries it on at night and finds the Mirror of Erised, his family sees and warned by Dumbledore.
- Nicolas Flamel – In which Harry learns that Snape will referee the next Quidditch match, Flamel found, Gryffindor defeats Hufflepuff when Harry grabs the snitch after only five minutes. Harry follows Snape into the Forbidden Forest where he meets Quirrell and they talk about the Philosopher’s Stone.
- Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback – Hermione begins revising, the instructors assign additional homework, Harry, Ron, and Hermione visit Hagrid, learn he has a dragon’s egg, and later watch it hatch. As the dragon increases in size, it becomes more difficult to conceal the illegal pet, until Charlie Weasley agrees to have it sent to him in Romania. Norbert is dispatched from the topmost tower, but Harry and Hermione are apprehended on their way back to their hostel by Filch.
- The Forbidden Forest – In which Harry’s reputation plummets after his exploits cost his family 150 points, he overhears another talk, and they serve detention with Hagrid, who leads them to the Forbidden Forest in search of an injured unicorn, which they discover to be dead. A centaur saves Harry from Voldemort.
- Through the Trapdoor – The students begin their exams, Hagrid reveals how to manage Fluffy, Harry, Ron, and Hermione attempt to warn Dumbledore, but he has been summoned away. Fearing Snape will make a move to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to go after it themselves. They make their way to Fluffy, put him to sleep, and then down the trapdoor, past plants, chessmen, and potions.
- The Man With Two Faces – In which Harry finds that Quirrell, not Snape, is after the Stone and working for Voldemort. Quirrell tries to discover the Stone using the Mirror of Erised, but it delivers it to Harry. Voldemort is aware of this and, as part of Quirrell’s plan, instructs the professor to murder Harry, who blacks out during the battle. He wakes up in a hospital bed and learns a lot from Dumbledore. Gryffindor receives the House Cup at the end-of-year dinner.
