Major Characters

Harry Potter

Harry Potter, the 11-year-old son of Lily and James Potter, is famous because he is the only wizard known to have survived an attack by the evil Voldemort. Since his parents died when he was one, Harry has lived in England with his mean aunt and uncle Dursley. He is a weak boy with glasses and messy brown hair. When he turns eleven, he is taken to Hogwarts, the school for wizards, where he learns to fly, makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and saves the school from Voldemort’s evil plan to steal the Sorcerer’s Stone. Even though he goes back to live with the Dursleys when school is out for the summer, he knows he is a strong and skilled wizard and is looking forward to learning more magic and making more friends when he returns the following year.

Rubeus Hagrid

Hagrid is in charge of the animals at Hogwarts and is a friend of Harry’s. He saves Harry from the Dursleys and takes him to Diagon Alley to meet other wizards and Hogwarts. Hagrid was once kicked out of Hogwarts for being stupid and clumsy, and he often said things that should have been kept quiet.

Voldemort

Voldemort is the bad guy in the book. He killed Harry’s parents and wants to kill Harry as well. Wizards rarely say his name, and everyone who thinks about him gets scared. He used to be a good wizard, but his ideas and powers turned terrible. Now he lives in different hosts, like Quirrell, who keep him alive until he can steal the Sorcerer’s Stone and become immortal.

Ron Weasley

Ron Weasley is one of Harry Potter’s friends. He is the youngest son of a big family of boys with red hair and freckles and the youngest son of the Weasleys. Even though his family doesn’t have much money, they can still send Ron to Hogwarts and give Harry gifts for Christmas. Ron is good at Wizard’s Chest but doesn’t like Hermione at first. As the three figure out what’s going on with the Sorcerer’s Stone, Ron’s help getting through the chess chamber is essential, and he gives up his power for Harry.

Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger is an intelligent, proud, bookish girl who does everything by the book. Even though she keeps her nose up and reads too many books initially, she eventually becomes friends with Ron and Harry. She is vital to their plan to eliminate Voldemort and save Hogwarts and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Her skills as a wizard in Herbology are needed to get through one of the rooms. She is among the few wizards who grew up in an average human family.

Professor Quirrell

Professor Quirrell is a shy man who stutters too much. He is one of the teachers at Hogwarts. Quirrell is the bad guy, even though he seems to be blackmailed and controlled by Snape. He follows Voldemort instead of Dumbledore and tries to kill Harry at the end. He always wears a turban, which hides the fact that Voldemort lives inside him.

Professor Snape

Professor Snape is the scary potions teacher at Hogwarts. He controls the Slytherin house and seems to hate Harry Potter. Snape is the one who tries to protect Harry from Quirrell and the evil spirit. At first, Harry and his friends think that Snape is the evil professor following Voldemort. Snape does dislike Harry, but only because he and Harry’s father, James Potter, were rivals at Hogwarts.

Albus Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts and the best wizard. He is old, wise, and respected. He is kind, generous, and a little bit crazy. He watched Harry Potter from when he was born until he told everyone about his heroic actions. At the end of the book, he gives the House Cup to Gryffindor.

Draco Malfoy

Draco Malfoy is Harry Potter’s worst enemy, and Harry fights with him throughout the book. Draco comes from a long line of spoiled wizards, some of whom have joined Voldemort. He always makes fun of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville and often tricks them into getting into trouble.
