Harry Potter

The main character in the Harry Potter books is Harry Potter. In “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” he is much happier to have found Hogwarts and made new friends, but he is sad that his old friends haven’t written or told him anything. After much trouble, he goes to Hogwarts and faces new problems.
He learns that he is a Parselmouth, and the idea that he might be the Heir of Slytherin scares him. He wants to find a way to stop the attacks on Muggle-born students and asks his friends Hermione and Ron for help. He doesn’t understand Dobby’s strange and frantic attempts to save him, but he faces all the dangers and wins in the end.

Hermione Granger

Harry’s friend Hermione Granger is the most brilliant student in her class. She knows a lot and continuously learns something new from books at the library. Like the others, she worries about the attacks on students born in the Muggle world and wants to figure out how to stop them. She shows the “trio” how to make the Polyjuice Potion, which makes the person who drinks it look like anyone they want. Hermione is scared when the creature attacks her in the Chamber of Secrets, but she is critical in helping Harry and Ron figure out what kind of animal it is.

Ron Weasley

Harry Potter’s close friend Ronald Weasley helps him escape from his Uncle’s house when he is locked up there. Ron also invites Harry to stay at the Burrow, which is a place that Harry loves to visit and stay. Ron suggests they take his father’s magical flying car to Hogwarts when they miss the Express. He later regrets this idea.
Harry and Ron drink the Polyjuice Potion, change into Crabbe and Goyle, and then try to force Malfoy to tell them who the Heir of Slytherin is by making him look like Crabbe and Goyle. Ron and Harry also go to the Forbidden Forest, where they meet Hagrid’s friend Aragog, a giant spider. Lastly, they go together into the Chamber of Secrets to save Ginny, Ron’s sister, who has been taken there.

Dobby

Dobby is a house elf, a magical creature that works around the house. Dobby meets Harry at his Uncle’s house. He keeps telling Harry how dangerous it is to go back to Hogwarts.
Dobby is the one who stopped Harry’s letters from getting to him, stopped Harry and Ron from getting on platform 9 3/4, and sent the rogue bludger in the Quidditch match against Slytherin that almost killed Harry. He is also found to be Lucius Malfoy’s house-elf, and Harry finally frees him by giving his sock to Dobby through Lucius Malfoy.

Professor Gilderoy Lockhart

Professor Gilderoy Lockhart will now teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. He is a famous, handsome wizard who has written several books about his adventures that have sold many copies. He always likes to be in the spotlight and keeps saying that Harry is doing stupid things to get famous. In the end, it turns out that he is a fake and stole the adventures of real wizards and wrote about them in his books. At the end of the book, Ron’s broken wand backfires on him and makes him forget everything.

Lord Voldemort

Lord Voldemort, whose real name is Tom Riddle, is the main bad guy in this book and the whole series. He is a dark wizard who always shows up in strange forms using dark magic. This is because he almost died when he attacked Harry when he was only a year old and lost his health. He is a Parseltongue and the son of Salazar Slytherin. He is also the Heir of Slytherin. In the Chamber of Secrets, he calls up a Basilisk, a giant snake that can kill people just by looking into its eyes.

Rubeus Hagrid

Rubeus Hagrid is the groundskeeper and gamekeeper at Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are close friends with him. Fifty years ago, he was kicked out of Hogwarts because it was wrongly thought that he had let the beast out of the Chamber of Secrets. He is also taken to Azkaban when more students are attacked, and questions are raised. Still, Tom Riddle is found to be the one who does this, so he is eventually brought back.

Arthur Weasley

Arthur Weasley is the dad of all the Weasley kids and Molly Weasley’s husband. He works in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office at the Ministry of Magic. He is a charming wizard who is very curious about muggles and interested in how they live.

Ginny Weasley

Ginerva Weasley, who is named Ginny Weasley, is in her first year at Hogwarts. She is the youngest of the Weasley siblings and is crazy about and interested in Harry. She also sends Harry Valentine’s poem with the help of a dwarf dressed as Cupid. In the end, it is discovered that she had Tom Riddle’s diary and that he used it to get her to do what he wanted.

Fred and George Weasley

The twins among Weasley’s Siblings are Fred and George Weasley. They are happy, funny, and like to have fun. They are always planning trips and other fun things to do. Even though their mother yells at him, they help Harry and his brother Ron leave their Uncle’s house.

Draco Malfoy

Draco Malfoy is in his second year at Hogwarts. He has some of the same classes as Harry and Ron. He is from the Slytherin house, and his best friends, Crabbe and Goyle, are always with him. He is always mean to Harry, Ron, Hermione, and their other friends and makes fun of them. He and Harry face each other in a duel at the Dueling Club, where Harry uses Parseltongue to stop Malfoy’s snake.

Lucius Malfoy

Lucius Malfoy is a pure-blooded wizard proud of his family and heritage. He is the father of Draco Malfoy, and it turns out that he was the one who opened the Chamber of Secrets. He gets Ginny Weasley to do what he wants by showing her Tom Riddle’s diary. In the end, Harry gets even with him by setting Dobby, his house-elf, free and giving him back the journal that he destroyed.

Neville Longbottom

Neville Longbottom is in his second year at Hogwarts. He is in Harry and Ron’s class and shares a room with them. He is a member of Gryffindor. Malfoy and sometimes Snape always pick on him because he forgets things and is afraid. He passes out in Herbology class when he sees Mandrakes but is pretty good at the subject.

Hedwig

His owl is named Hedwig. She is white as snow and loves Harry most of the time. She brings Harry’s and Harry’s mail.

Professor Albus Dumbledore

Professor Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is a very skilled and experienced wizard. He is very charming to Harry and is always there to help him. Due to the attacks on Muggle-born students, which later turn out to be an evil plan by Lucius Malfoy, the board of governors fires him from his job. At the end of the book, he is put back in charge of Hogwarts.

Professor Severus Snape

Professor Severus Snape works at Hogwarts as a teacher. He teaches potions, but rumors have been going around for a long time that he wants the Defense Against the Dark Arts job. Snape is the teacher Harry dislikes the most because he always picks on Harry and mistreats him. Snape also wants Harry and Ron to be kicked out of Hogwarts if they use a flying car to get there after missing their train.

Dudley Dursley

Dudley Dursley is Harry’s cousin, the son of Petunia and Vernon Dursley. He is Harry’s brother-in-law. He always picked on Harry, but when he found out Harry was a wizard, he kept his distance and stuck to verbal threats and insults.

Petunia Dursley

Harry’s aunt is Petunia Dursley, also his mother’s sister, Lily. She is married to Vernon Dursley and has a son named Dudley. She is very strict with Harry, but she is charming to Dudley. She is very interested in almost everything and often checks on her neighbors.

Vernon Dursley

Vernon Dursley is Harry’s Uncle and is married to Petunia, the sister of Harry’s mother. He is harsh and means to Harry, and he fears magic. He has the Masons over, but Harry is locked in a room when Dobby drops a pudding on Mrs. Mason.

Hannah Abbott

Hannah Abbott has been at Hogwarts for two years. She is from Hufflepuff house, and when Ernie Macmillan says that Harry is the heir of Slytherin, she defends him a lot.

Aragog

Aragog is the giant spider, or Acromantula, who lived in the Hogwarts castle 50 years before the events of this book and was thought to be the best in the Chamber of Secrets. Hagrid took him to court and took care of him. Hagrid was wrongly accused and kicked out of Hogwarts. Aragog now lives in the Forbidden Forest. When Harry and Ron visited him, he told his many generations of offspring to eat them.

Professor Binns

Professor Cuthbert Binns is the only teacher at Hogwarts who is also a ghost. He teaches History of Magic, and his classes are boring because he talks in a monotone voice and doesn’t talk to his students.

Bill Weasley

Bill Weasley is the oldest son of Molly and Arthur Weasley. He is also the oldest brother of Ron and the other Weasley siblings. He is a banker at Gringotts.

Charlie Weasley

Charlie Weasley is Molly and Arthur Weasley’s second-oldest son. He is the brother of Ron and the other Weasley siblings. He has a job in Romania with dragons. He also went to Hogwarts and was a well-liked student there.

Mr. Borgin

Mr. Borgin owns Borgin and Burkes, a novelty and ancient artifact store best known for its dark magic relics. When Lucius Malfoy and his son Draco come to the shop to talk about hiding some of Lucius’ dark magic items, Lucius Malfoy threatens him.

The Bloody Baron

The Bloody Baron is Slytherin’s house’s ghost. He is the only person besides Dumbledore who can control Peeves, the Poltergeist, the spirit who causes trouble.

Katie Bell

Katie Bell is a Gryffindor student in her third year at Hogwarts. She plays on the Gryffindor Quidditch team as a chaser.

Millicent Bulstrode

Millicent Bulstrode is in her second year at Hogwarts and is in the Slytherin house. She has a duel with Hermione Granger at the dueling club after Hermione gets a lock of hair she thinks belongs to Millicent. Hermione finds out the hair was from a cat after she uses it in the Polyjuice potion.

Colin Creevey

Colin Creevey is in his first year at Hogwarts. He is in the Gryffindor house. He is a student born into the Muggle world and is crazy about Harry Potter. He always has a camera with him and tries to talk to Harry whenever he sees him. Colin Creevey is one of the people who get scared by the beast in the Chamber of Secrets.

Vincent Crabbe

Vincent Crabbe is one of Draco Malfoy’s friends and is almost always seen with Gregory Goyle. He is in his second year of school and is in the Slytherin house.

Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore

Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore was a wizard when he was alive, but he was killed by having his head cut off. So, he is one of the headless ghosts who lead “headless hunts,” and he doesn’t let Nearly Headless Nick join them. At the party for Nearly Headless Nick’s birthday, Harry, Ron, and Hermione meet him.

Professor Armando Dippet

When the Chamber of Secrets first opened fifty years ago, Professor Armando Dippet was the headmaster of Hogwarts.

Errol

Errol is the Weasleys’ family owl. He is ancient and always gets messages to people very late.

Fang

Hagrid’s hut is home to a boarhound named Fang. Fang is an amiable animal who constantly licks people who come to Hagrid’s house. He’s not very brave, as Harry and Ron find out when they take him to the Forbidden Forest.

Fawkes

Fawkes is the Phoenix that Dumbledore has with him in his office. Harry sees Fawkes for the first time in Dumbledore’s office just before he is reborn from his ashes. At the end of the book, Fawkes shows up with the Sorting Hat, which has the Sword of Gryffindor inside. It helps Harry beat Voldemort and Basilisk. Fawkes finally heals Harry’s wounds and safely gets them out of the chamber.

Argus Filch

Hogwarts Castle is taken care of by Argus Filch. Even though he was born into a family of wizards, he is a squib who can’t do magic. He is furious that Harry and Ron looked at his pamphlets about elemental magic called “Quikspell.” He is sick and thinks that Harry is to blame for Mrs. Norris, his pet cat, being scared.

Justin Finch-Fletchley

Justin Finch-Fletchley has been at Hogwarts for two years. He is a Hufflepuff, and Harry and Ron become friends in Herbology class. But when Draco and Harry are fighting in the dueling club, Harry tries to use Parseltongue to stop a snake that Draco made from going near Justin. Still, Justin gets it wrong as Harry tries to get the snake to come toward him. Ultimately, the beast in the Chamber of Secrets also attacks Justin while he is frozen with fear.

Professor Flitwick

Hogwarts has a teacher named Professor Filius Flitwick. He is a Charms teacher. He is a good wizard, but his voice is high-pitched and short. He is in charge of Ravenclaw.

Seamus Finnigan

Seamus Finnigan goes to Hogwarts and is in his second year there. He lives with Harry and Ron and is in the same class. He is from the Gryffindor house. Dean Thomas is a close friend of his.

Cornelius Fudge

The Minister at the Ministry of Magic is Cornelius Fudge. He is the most critical person in charge of magic in Great Britain. As the number of attacks on Muggle-born students goes up, he goes to Hagrid’s house to take him to Azkaban, wrongly accusing him of being the one who did it.

Godric Gryffindor

One of the people who started Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was Godric Gryffindor. His name is given to the house where he lives. Harry pulls the Sword of Gryffindor out of the Sorting Hat to fight the Basilisk. Godric Gryffindor once owned this sword.

Gregory Goyle

Gregory Goyle is in his second year at Hogwarts School. He is from Slytherin house and is one of Draco Malfoy’s goons, along with Vincent Crabbe. Ron uses the Polyjuice Potion to make him look like someone else when he and Harry go to the Slytherin dorms to ask Draco about the Heir of Slytherin.

Madam Hooch

Madam Hooch, a flying teacher, rules most Quidditch games at Hogwarts. She looks like a bird because she has straight hair and eyes that stand out.

Angelina Johnson

Angelina Johnson is a student at Hogwarts in her fourth year. She is from the Gryffindor house and plays as a chaser on the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

The Masons

On Harry’s 12th birthday, the Masons are having dinner at Number 4, Privet Drive. Mr. Mason is a builder, and Uncle Vernon hopes to do business with him on behalf of his company, Grunnings. When Harry doesn’t listen to Dobby, he drops Aunt Petunia’s pudding on Mrs. Mason’s head.

Professor McGonagall

Professor Minerva McGonagall heads the Gryffindor house and teaches Transfiguration at Hogwarts. She is very strict, but she is also very kind when she needs to be. She decides not to kick Harry and Ron out of school when they arrive in the flying car. Also, she takes over Professor Dumbledore’s job as Headmistress of Hogwarts when the Board of Governors fires him.

Moaning Myrtle

Myrtle Warren went to Hogwarts fifty years before the story in this book takes place. The beast killed her from the Chamber of Secrets in the girl’s bathroom, and she stayed there as a ghost. She is called “Moaning Myrtle” because she keeps crying and moaning, which makes people not want to go to the bathroom.

Ernie Macmillan

Ernie MacMillan goes to Hogwarts and is in his second year there. He is a Hufflepuff, and he thinks there is a good chance that Harry is the Heir of Slytherin. He also tries to convince his other Hufflepuff classmates that Harry can beat Voldemort because he is a powerful dark wizard.

Nearly Headless Nick

Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington is a ghost who lives in the Hogwarts castle and is friends with Harry. He is also known as “Nearly Headless Nick.” He invites Harry to his “Death Day” party and is one of the people who get hurt by the beast in the Chamber of Secrets. He and Justin Finch Fletchley are found frozen in place.

Mrs. Norris

Mrs. Norris is Mr. Argus Filch’s pet cat. She roams around the castle and lets Mr. Filch know if any students are hanging out there. She is the first person the beast in the Chamber of Secrets hurts.

Peeves the Poltergeist

As his name suggests, Peeves the Poltergeist is a ghost who lives in Hogwarts Castle with the other spirits. He is always causing trouble by dropping things on people and making noise in the hallways. He also sings that Harry did it when he was the first person to see Harry with the frozen bodies of Nearly Headless Nick and Justin Finch Fletchley.

Madam Pince

The Librarian at Hogwarts is a woman named Madam Irma Pince. She is a strict witch, so when she sees Hermione has a note signed by Professor Lockhart to get books from the restricted section, she is skeptical.

Madam Poppy Pomfrey

Madam Poppy Pomfrey oversees the nurses at Hogwarts’ Hospital Wing. She is very strict but also very kind and caring. She helps Harry’s bones grow back after Lockhart takes them away, and she also helps everyone who is scared come back to life.

Salazar Slytherin

Salazar Slytherin is one of the four people who started Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and his name is on the Slytherin house. He also made the Chamber of Secrets and put a Basilisk in it. He did this hoping that one day, his son or daughter would come to Hogwarts and finish his plan to make it a school for only “Pure-blooded” wizards.

Alicia Spinnet

Alicia Spinnet is in her fourth year at Hogwarts and is in Gryffindor. She is a chaser on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. When the rogue bludger attacks Harry during a game, she asks Oliver Wood to take him to safety.

Professor Pomona Sprout

Professor Pomona Sprout teaches Herbology at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She is critical to Madam Pomfrey’s ability to make the medicine that will bring back to life those who were scared by Mandrake roots.

Dean Thomas

Dean Thomas is in Harry’s class and his second year of Gryffindor. He also lives with Harry and is Seamus Finnigan’s best friend.

Oliver Wood

Oliver Wood is in his sixth year of school and is from Gryffindor. He is also the Gryffindor Quidditch team’s captain and keeper. He is determined to win the tournament, so he makes plans and asks his teammates to get up early and come to practice.
